About Sailing Camp
Safety, fun & sailing skills – in that order – are what sailing camp is all about. Sail campers will learn the sailing basics leading to the U.S. Sailing “Small Boat Sailor” Certification, including rigging & de-rigging, knots, tacking, stopping & starting, docking, and the favorite skill – capsize recovery!

Classes are taught by volunteer U.S. Sailing-certified instructors, who accompany the sailboats out onto the water in safety boats. Young beginners (8-10 years old) who are under 100 pounds sail solo in Optimists, the first boat of most Olympic sailors. It’s a very stable & forgiving boat.

Older beginners and intermediate sailors sail in Sunfish, the most popular boat ever built. Sunfish sailors have the opportunity to sail solo as well as with a friend during the week.

Camp goes on rain or shine. There are onshore activities, instruction & games to develop skills if sailing has to be postponed due to storms or lack of wind.

Boats are launched from both the docks and beach at the Watts Bay marina of Moraine State Park. There are vending machines with beverages, rest rooms & water fountains at Watts Bay.

Parents should park in the public parking area of Watt’s Bay, not in the permit-only marina where the sail camp is held. However, children & gear may be dropped off at the marina before parking, if desired. Parents are encouraged to stay & help with launching the boats, pulling them out of out of the water, etc. We appreciate your help!

What to wear:

  • Bathing suit & T-shirt. Sailors will get wet!
  • Footgear – closed-toe shoes that can get wet (old sneakers, boat shoes). No sandals!
  • Visor, ball cap, or sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

What to bring:

  • A well-fitting life jacket (one that cannot be pulled off when buckled)
  • A lunch, including a drink
  • Towel
  • Rain gear
  • Fleece sweatshirt for cool weather (fleece dries quickly & is warm even when wet)
  • Complete change of clothes for the ride home
  • Water bottle
